Cornerstone is an established congregation with a rich history that dates back more than half a century. The congregation was initially founded by ambitious post-war Dutch immigrants who came to Canada seeking opportunities to work and raise families. Almost immediately these immigrants committed themselves to establishing Reformed churches and Christian school societies, the fruit of which remains with us today in numerous churches and Christian schools across Canada.
Our ecclesiastical heritage lies with the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century and the recovery of biblical doctrine and practice in the church initiated by individuals such as Martin Luther and John Calvin. We remain doctrinally committed to certain confessions or doctrinal standards produced by the Reformation church—namely the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession and the Canons of Dort.
Our chief allegiance, however, is to Jesus Christ whom we regard as our Saviour and the Lord of the universe. The Bible teaches us that God did not take leave of the world when humanity fell into sin, but determined to save the world. This plan of salvation involved God the Father sending his Son to assume our humanity and to suffer and die for our sins on the cross. Through his resurrection on Easter three days later, Jesus initiated a new world order in which payment for sin has been satisfactorily made and the promise of a new world, void of sin and suffering, has been guaranteed. We believe that hope for the world is found only in believing Jesus Christ and in joining the church which the Bible calls “the body of Christ.”
